Poseiden Boards

Micaela Ramirez, founder and owner of Poseidon, organized a tour to South America that for the first time in history brought male and female skate competitions together on the same day. Female skaters Vanessa Torres, Alison "Nugget" Matasi, Violet Kimble, and Sophie Poppe toured through Chile, Argentina, and Brazil for skate clinics, demonstrations, skate-offs, and competitions. They toured with Chris Brendsen , filmer, Ana Paula Negrao, photographer, and Liza Grzeskowiak, CEO of Check It Out magazine (checkitoutmag.com). Along the way, they drew crowds of fans and captured the media attention of ESPN, Fox Sports, and dozens of local channels and press agencies. The girls also experienced several unexpected travel delays, which led to filling time with freestyling and racing in airport wheelchairs, getting haircuts, touring Peru.

In Chile, Mario Silva of New Life helped organize the event and is also helping Poseidon with the Ecuador 2008 tour. They held a skate clinic at which over 40 girls showed up to skate and over 50 guys came just to watch. Then they had male and female skate-offs. The next day there was a demo in the Parque de los Reyes, and the girls were very well received by a crowd of over 350 people.

In Argentina, Poseidon held female and male competitions that drew a crowd of over 550 fans. It was the first time in Argentina that a competition for both boys and girls was achieved on the same day. About 22 girls and 25 guys competed in the event, and prizes were up to $950. ESPN, FOX Sports, and several local channels came out to cover the girls skate. No other skating competition in Argentina had ever received so much press and media attention. Girls Assault helped Poseidon with the successful event. There was also a skate clinic in which the girls answered questions for an anxious crowd of skaters. They also signed many autographs (on their own photos in “Check it out Magazine”) and had a chance to meet many local fans.

In Brazil, there was a competition at which over 20 girls competed and at least 500 people showed up to watch. Afterwards, the girls went to an Eco-Resort, where they had a demonstration and soon after had a chance to relax and kick back. Ten years ago, Ana Paula and Liza from Check It Out magazine were the first females to start the skate movement in Brazil. Ana Paula was presented with a medal for all her work in the South American skateboarding industry.
